Coherence Principle

Below is an incoherent example and presentation, and a good demonstration of how not to adhere to the coherence principle, followed by commentary and suggestions for improvement

The Goddess of the Coherence Principle says:

"Thou shalt not include irrelevant words or pictures in multimedia presentations or thou willst hurt student learning!"

Right from the start of this slideshow, the cute little pictures take away from the point of the presentation, pulling your eyes to the pictures, trying to make some connection between them and what is being said in the text.

You won't find a connection between these graphics or the text, because there is none.  However, they are a great illustration of the principle, because not only are they irrelevant pictures, the pictures include irrelevant words like "Sweet" and "Cool."

An added distraction is due to the fact the graphics are so small, and likely would cause viewers to be squinting at them trying to tie them into the text and not paying attention to the presentation.

The single graphic on the bottom, with the student using a laptop saying cool, would be sufficient for the first page, since it ties in somewhat to the topic.  The juggling dog being video taped is a total distraction and out of place.  More simple graphics such as a PC or a parent and child working on a computer, or a graphic portraying the Internet or World Wide Web would be more appropriate to the topic and not a violation of the coherence principle.
